Residence Anima is located just above Amoudi Beach and close to the famous Oia Castle.
“Awakened by the sea, proud / you raised your chest of stone / punctuated by the inspiration of the south wind / so that pain could affect his own heart there. / I hope to register your true heart in it” (Trans. By Jeffrey Carson and Nikos Sarris). These are the words with which the great Greek poet Odysseas Elytis expressed his feelings for Oia in his poem “Ode to Santorini”.
The traditional village of Oia, a classified monument, develops along the volcanic rocks; It is the jewel of Santorini. Adored by all for its exquisite timeless beauty and unforgettable sunsets, Oia wows visitors with its picturesque yposkafa (rock-cut residences), narrow walkways, and impressive caldera. “It was Oia who made me wiser and helped me improve my humble aesthetic perception; He taught me the art of subtraction, or rather non-addition, the value of harmony and human scale,” explains stylist Yannis Tseklenis, referring to the uniqueness of Oia. In the Middle Ages, one of the island’s “Kastelias” (castles) was built in Oia: the “Kastelli di San Nicola”. There is news of the castle’s existence since 1480, but it probably began to form a little earlier, when the Venetians were the island’s rulers.
Of the castle of Saint-Nicolas, today only a part of the tower survives. It takes its name from a subcultural church dedicated to Agios Nikolaos and was built around 1450. The castle was severely damaged by the 1956 earthquake and much of the traditional settlement fell into the sea under the caldera. The great churches, such as the Church of San Giorgio and the Panagia Placansi, were utterly destroyed. Although it did not stay very close to the castle, it is one of Greece’s most touristic places. This is where people from all over the world come to watch the sunset every afternoon. And it is located right next to the private terrace of the Anima Residence.
